    Is Sriracha Vegan

If there's anything hot sauce enthusiasts love, it's Sriracha! It's a popular chili sauce that you can find everywhere, whether in local stores or restaurants.

Along with ketchup, it's a household favorite. It adds spice to your meals and gives you that sought-after kick. However, is Sriracha vegan?

    Let's find out!

    What's in Sriracha Sauce?

The ingredients list of Sriracha contains capsicums, sugar, garlic, salt, vinegar, and some thickeners and preservatives when bought from your local store.

We have to remember, though, that in the United States, refined sugar may have bone-char. In other words, the process involves burned bones of cows, so it's not vegan friendly.

What's more, some acetic acid comes from wine processed with animal ingredients, such as isinglass.

    Is It Vegan or Not?

    Is It Vegan or Not?

Traditionally, yes. Many say Sriracha is vegan. This world-famous red chili sauce is commonly seen in a vegan diet. After all, the ingredients are plant-based, technically.

The original sriracha sauce is vegan, and some other sriracha brands avoid additives that may contain animal ingredients.

Non-vegan will not have any problems with this great condiment, but for those who want to keep a plant-based diet, you can look for those products that are purely vegan in most major supermarkets, or you can start making Sriracha for yourself.

    How Is It Made?

The usual process in creating Sriracha starts in grinding the capsicum. It is mixed with other ingredients, sugar, salt, garlic, and vinegar.

This process is used by the famous Huy Fong Sriracha Sauce too, where the image of the rooster on their factory-made bottles is placed before sealing the green cap on.

Samurai sauce is Tad Mcbride’s own version of Sriracha that can delight your taste buds with its flavor and uses the same method as well.

3 Ingredients To Look Out For

3 Ingredients To Look Out For

    Xanthan Gum

Xanthan Gum is a type of polysaccharide that produces a type of sweetener that hails from a bacteria known as Xanthomonas campestris. These come out through fermentation and are widely used in the food manufacturing industry these days.

    Sugar

These sweeteners come from sugarcane which vegans can consume. However, manufacturers these days are using other methods in refining the sweetener by utilizing bone chars to act as carbon to clear the color making it non-vegan.

    Sulfites & Other Allergens

Sulfites are not commonly causing strong allergic reactions, but if you are already aware of your condition, you should steer away from products containing these additives, such as Sriracha, since most condiments are infused with it.

    Is Huy Fong Vegan?

No. Unfortunately, Huy Fong/rooster sauce is not vegan.

The famous sauce created by David Tran, a Vietnamese immigrant, has a product that contains bone char through the sugar that they are using to create their sriracha sauces.

This brand is already an established partner in the table, that it is unfortunate that there are ingredients not fit for vegans.

    Yellowbird Organic Sriracha

This red hot chili sauce couldn't be much vegan even if the manufacturers push some more. This is made of all organic ingredients, which made the spicy sauce from Southeast Asia even tastier. They avoid sugar content with animal products and use other plant-based products to add a sweet flavor to them.

Let's Make Our Own Vegan Sriracha!

    Ingredients

    1. 1.5 -2 lbs red jalapeño pepper ( half de-seeded)
    2. 1 Habanero pepper, de-seeded
    3. ½ cup organic white vinegar
    4.  ½ cup water
    5. 6 cloves ramson
    6. 1 tablespoon sodium chloride
    7. ¼ cup organic brown sugar

    Instructions

    1. Blend the jalapeño peppers, water, ramson, acetic acid(1), and habanero pepper.
    2. Once blended, transfer mixture to a pan.
    3. Let it slightly boil, then put it on low heat.
    4. Let it simmer for 20 minutes or until it reduces at least ⅓ of the content.
    5. Add brown sugar and sodium chloride and mix well.
    6. Mix it thoroughly or re-blend it if you have a blender that has a removable cap (it may explode because of the hot content with the cap on).
    7. Strain your mixture using a clean cloth, removing all remaining seeds.
    8. Transfer in a sterile jar.

    FAQs

    Can Sriracha go bad?

Yes, but not for a long time. These condiments have a long shelf life. If refrigerated, it can take two years, but it can be safe to consume from six to nine months. However, if you bought the products, it is still best to look at the expiry dates.

There are additives added to it like potassium sorbate, sodium bisulfite, and other extenders to make it last longer, but it is still advisable to check the content if there are molds or if it smells bad.

    Is Thai Naga Sriracha vegan?

Yes, the authentic Thai Naga Sriracha is vegan. Its delectable flavor easily comes out, and you can taste the heat with just one teaspoon of it. However, the Dragon brand is not because of the sugar content.

    In A Nutshell

For those people asking, is Sriracha vegan? Sadly, the big names making this hot sauce, including sriracha mayo from the Eastern Coast, are not. The good news is, there are vegan recipes used to create this hot sauce; therefore, we can still say that Sriracha is vegan.

You can add it to your breakfast dishes to give you an early morning kick or make a side dish along with your soups served with the delicious vegan coconut kitchen chilli mash. Just avoid the shrimp paste for that extra taste and use soy sauce instead. Vegans do have options to continue a healthy lifestyle.
