    Dressing Ingredients

Hummus dressing ingredients: Red wine vinegar, water, Italian seasoning, garlic, lemon juice, and hummus.
    • Red Wine Vinegar: Red wine vinegar is sharp and tangy; it has smokier notes and a fuller body than you'll find in white vinegar. It also lends a rosy hue to foods.
    • Water: Water acts as an emulsifier in the absence of oil.
    • Italian Seasoning: The blend of herbs present in Italian seasoning usually consists of basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, and marjoram, with other herbs and spices sometimes appearing.
    • Garlic: I prefer using fresh garlic cloves for the best flavor.
    • Lemon Juice: I prefer fresh lemon juice for dressings, sauces, and dips.
    • Hummus: I chose oil-free regular, flavor hummus.

    Dressing Ingredient Substitutions

    • Balsamic vinegar is similar to red wine vinegar, with a bolder flavor.
    • Herbs de Provence is similar to Italian seasoning.
    • Use ⅛ teaspoon of garlic powder in place of each clove.
    • If you don't have fresh lemon juice, try bottled lemon juice.
    • Choose any hummus or flavored hummus for a unique flavor.

How to Make Hummus Salad Dressing

I added all the dressing ingredients on a bowl.
    1. Place all the ingredients into a bowl.
    2. Whisk the ingredients together.
    3. Transfer the hummus salad dressing to a container.
    4. Refrigerate the dressing covered until ready to use it.
I am whisking the ingredients together.

    Hummus Salad Dressing Suggestions

This vegan dressing recipe is versatile for a variety of recipes.

    • Greek Potato Salad
    • Mediterranean Couscous Salad
    • Kale Crunch Salad
    • Mediterranean Quinoa Salad
    • Add to a baked potato or sweet potato.
    • Serve as a vegetable dip.
    • Marinate vegetables in the dressing.
    • Make a tomato and cucumber salad and marinate in the dressing.

    Recipe FAQs

Is hummus better than vegan mayo?

Yes! Hummus is a great way to add creaminess to a dressing! It also contains protein and fiber.

Is hummus a carbohydrate or a protein?

Hummus is both a carbohydrate and a protein.

    Is all salad dressing vegan?

No; many salad dressings contain animal products like dairy, eggs, and sometimes fish like anchovies.

    Tips

    • Using fresh lemons and garlic is better whenever possible.
    • For a tip, when lemons and other citrus are in season, juice them and freeze them in ice cube trays, or I like Souper Cubes, which hold 2 Tablespoons of juice in each well of the tray.
    • Choosing a flavored hummus gives the dressing a different flavor every time. Jalapeno cilantro hummus or red pepper hummus are a couple of ideas.
    • The dressing stores well for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.

This oil-free hummus salad dressing is easy and simple to make. Try it on a green salad, in a pasta salad, or as a vegetable dip.

Hi Christine, I like three different brands: Engine, Cava, and Oasis; all make oil-free hummus, or you could make your own. These brands are available at Kroger (Frys), Sprouts, and Whole Foods. I hope this helps.

I would like to make this recipe. I do freeze lemon and lime juice but in 1 T. amounts. How much would you say the juice of 1 lemon is?
