Papa Murphy Pizza
Papa Murphy's is a unique pizza chain that offers pizza prepared for you to bake at home. Prepared from scratch with fresh ingredients so you can take it, bake it, and enjoy it fresh out of the oven.
I love this concept! Often, I don't want to get pizza delivered because it's cold by the time it gets delivered. Or, I pick up my pizza, and it gets cold before I get home.
I pick up my prepared pizza at Papa Murphy's, yet not cooked. Then, I take it home and refrigerate it until I'm ready to bake it.
And they have several locations in 37 different states.

- Thin Crust.
- NY Crust.
- Fresh Pan Crust (described as "buttery," but it has no butter)
- Stuffed (it's not "stuffed" with cheese—it's just 2 layers)
Vegan Pizza Options
- Garden Veggie Pizza: The Garden Veggie pizza comes with original crust, traditional Sauce, mozzarella cheese, Roma tomatoes, mushrooms, black olives, green peppers, and a mixture of yellow, red, and green onions. To make this pizza vegan, swap out the mozzarella cheese for dairy-free cheese.
- Gourmet Vegetarian: The Gourmet Vegetarian pizza with original crust, gourmet white Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese, artichoke hearts, Roma tomatoes, topping cheese (mozzarella and cheddar), zucchini, mushrooms, spinach, a mixture of yellow, red, and green onions, and a herb and cheese blend as listed on the menu. This one needs some substitutions. Replace the gourmet white sauce with another of Papa Murphy's vegan sauces, ask for dairy free-cheese instead of the mozzarella, and remove both the topping cheese, as well as the herb and cheese blend. Then it's perfectly vegan!
- Customized Pizza: You can pick your own toppings and create your own vegan pizza masterpiece.
How to Bake Papa Murphy's Vegan Pizza
When you pick up a Papa Murphy's vegan pizza, it is on a baking pan or comes in a deep dish version. First, the dough is already made, with sauce, vegan cheese, and any toppings you choose. Then, the pizza is wrapped in plastic wrap with directions for baking.
Although Papa Murphy's offers a variety of vegan toppings, if you add your own toppings at home, you save a lot of money and get the toppings you want, and it's fun for the kids.
- Step 1 - Preheat. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Remove plastic wrap and leave the original crust pizza on the tray.
- Step 2 - Bake. Bake original crust pizza on the center oven rack for approximately 12 to 18 minutes (varies by oven). ...
- Step 3 - Enjoy! Let pizza sit for 5 minutes before cutting.
Each pizza comes with its own custom instructions for the different types of pizza dough options. And each pizza comes in its own baking pan, so there aren't any dishes.
Customizing Pizza at Home
To save a buck, we added our own toppings. We love a bunch of goodies on our pizza, so using veggies in the refrigerator, we chose to make our own pizza.
- Portobello Mushrooms: Portobello mushrooms are vegan meat in our house.
- Spinach: I chose organic spinach. It wilts perfectly when heated in the oven.
- Red Onion: Red onions are sweet and caramelized when baked in the oven.
- Grape Tomatoes: I cut the grape tomatoes into slices.
- Baby Bell Peppers: Baby bell peppers slice into perfect bite-sized pieces and offer excellent color and texture.
- Kalamata Olives: I love the savoriness of kalamata olives.
- Jalapenos: As you can see, we added jalapeno slices to half the pizza to customize it so my husband and I could enjoy the spiciness while the rest of the family stayed heat-free.
- Extra Sauce: We also ordered extra sauce because we like it saucy.
Other Possible Toppings
- Some people enjoy vegan pepperoni on their pizza.
- Others prefer vegan sausage.
- I love pineapple on my pizza, which is often debated in my house. Unfortunately, this time, I lost the pineapple battle.
- I love banana peppers for a slightly spicy addition.
- And, of course, you can always add more cheese or skip the vegan cheese altogether.
- A lot of people prefer green or black olives.
- And some people love green pepper, an excellent substitute for baby bell peppers or red peppers.
- I also enjoy red pepper flakes and a sprinkle of vegan parmesan cheese on my pizza.
FAQs
Yes, the baking tray helps the pizza cook evenly and also helps you carry the pizza from the oven to the table. However, the deep dish version requires you to move it directly out of the pan after baking
Bake within 60 minutes of purchase or refrigerate. If refrigerated, remove 60 minutes prior to baking for the crust to rise. Always bake pizzas within 24 hours of purchase!
Just like freezing a whole Papa Murphy's pizza, you'll want to make sure you double wrap all the slices to keep them from developing freezer burn. And you'll want to eat the pizza within 2-3 months for the best taste.
Tips
- If refrigerated, remove 60 minutes prior to baking for the crust to rise. Always bake pizzas within 24 hours of purchase.
- If your pizza has been refrigerated after cooking and is kept at a temperature lower than 40 degrees Fahrenheit, it's safe to eat for up to four days.
- If baking more than 1 pizza, place each pizza on a separate baking sheet. Place one baking sheet on the first oven rack and the other baking sheet on the second oven rack as planned before preheating your oven. Let the pizzas cook for 12 to 18 minutes; ovens vary in temperature.
- Another option you have if you don't want to cook your whole Papa Murphy's pizza is that you can freeze part of the uncooked pizza for later. While this isn't an official recommendation and it likely won't taste exactly the same as it would if you cooked it fresh, it's a good way to keep it from going to waste.
- To avoid soggy pizza always preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Your pizza needs to be cooked at a high temperature as this will ensure that it is crispy and cooked thoroughly but not dry. If your oven isn't hot enough it isn't going to cook your pizza evenly. The recommended temperature to cook a homemade pizza is between 450 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Deep dish pizza takes longer to cook. See specific instructions for the type of pizza ordered.
So, the next time you're craving pizza, take a bake a Papa Murphy's pizza. Choose one of their vegan options, create your own, or grab a plain vegan cheese pizza and create your own pizza at home.
