Although I'm not a big fan of fake meat products, my husband loves them. And, since transitioning to a plant-based diet, I sometimes use faux meat products to keep my husband on the plan, even if it means straying from the whole foods approach we follow. So, today, I made a vegan Philly cheese steak sandwich using Beyond Steak Tips.

I'm often divided whenever people ask me what I think about faux meat and other vegan products. I don't particularly care for them; however, I think eating these products is better than eating animal products. I also think eating faux meat and cheese occasionally, for those who enjoy it. isn't the end of the world.
Beyond meat products, and others like them, help people transition into eating plant-based. Those who don't like or know how to cook find comfort in recipes that include fake meats and cheeses.

Beyond Steak Tips Recipe Ingredients
- Beyond Steak Tips: Beyond Steak Tips is located in the plant-based frozen foods section of the store.
- Mushrooms: I used sliced cremini mushrooms.
- Garlic: I prefer using fresh garlic cloves whenever possible.
- Soy Sauce: Soy sauce gives the Beyond steak tips an umami flavor.
- Vegan Worcestershire Sauce: Vegan Worcestershire sauce has a slightly sweet, salty, tangy taste.
- Salt/Pepper: A pinch of salt and pepper heightens the taste of the steak tips and mushroom combination.
- Red Bell Pepper: Red bell peppers have a sweet flavor, and when caramelized with the onions and mushrooms, they become even sweeter.
- White Onion: White onion, although string when raw, sweetened when cooked.
- Jalapenos: Jalapenos add a slight spiciness to the pepper-onion mixture.
- French Bread: La Brea Bakery makes oil-free French Bread, as well as other rolls and breads, available at Fry's Market (Kroger).
- Violife Smoked Provolone Cheese(optional): Violife Smoked Provolone is my husband's favorite vegan cheese brand.
- Banana Peppers (optional): Banana peppers are mild and tangy and a special request from the taste-tester.
- Microgreens (optional): I added arugula microgreens for nutritional value 🙂
Beyond Steak Tips Recipe Ingredient Substitutions
- If you aren't into fake meat, skip the Beyond steak tips, and triple the amount of mushrooms.
- Jarred minced garlic and garlic powder are usually the easiest, most common substitutes, but other options exist. Garlic salt can also work when you're in a bind—use ¾ teaspoon garlic salt for one clove of garlic.
- Choose Tamari or liquid aminos for a gluten-free option for soy sauce.
- Balsamic vinegar is a substitute for vegan Worcestershire sauce.
- Try green peppers or baby bell peppers instead of red bell pepper.
- Red or white onions substitute white onion in this recipe.
- Serrano peppers are similar to jalapenos but a little less spicy.
- Any type of bread or roll works well for a Beyond Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich.
- Skip the vegan cheese, or try my nacho cheese sauce for this sandwich.
- Pepperoncinis substitute banana peppers in this recipe.

- In a separate skillet, on medium heat, add the sliced onions, red bell peppers and jalapeno slices.
- Stir often as the onions/peppers cook through; 5-7 minutes.
- Preheat an oven to 400 degrees.
- Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Open the French bread and lay it open-faced on the baking sheet.
- For one side of each bread half, add a generous amount of Beyond Steak Tips and mushrooms.
- On the other side of each bread half, add half the onion and peppers combination.
- If using the vegan cheese, place it on top of the steak tips/mushroom side.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until the vegan cheese melts completely.
- To serve, add banana peppers and microgreens, if using, and place the sandwich together.

Beyond Steak Tips Review
The Beyond Steak Tips were cooked in 5 minutes as the package indicated. And my husband loved it!
However, plain, without seasoning or sauce, the taste of the steak tips is very bland. But, when seasoned correctly, it absorbs flavors like tofu or tempeh. So, I definitely suggest choosing a seasoning blend you like or goes with the meal you plan to make using the product.
Beyond Steak is designed for stir-fries, fajitas, tacos, burritos, and sandwiches. And it could make a lovely addition to a vegan beef stew or chili. Unlike Beyond Burgers, the steak tips don't smell bad before, during or after cooking, nor does it have that offsetting red bloody look.
Of course, I took a bite, and although I would opt for all mushrooms, the flavor, texture, and taste were delicious.
So, overall, my husband gives it a thumbs up, 9 out of 10! I give mushrooms 10!
Recipe FAQs
The clinical trial reported the positive impact of replacing animal-based meat with Beyond Meat's plant-based meat over eight weeks, improving several cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as LDL cholesterol levels and TMAO.
These products already have a little oil, so they typically won't stick to the basket. You can use perforated parchment paper to line your air fryer basket for easier cleanup. Or use a non-stick pan. You do not need any oil at all.
Beyond Meat does not taste like meat. It does, however, have a unique nutty taste and satisfies many people transitioning to a plant-based diet.
Tips
- Do not thaw the Beyond Steak tips before cooking.
- Store the frozen steak tips in the freezer until ready to use.
- Vegan cheese melts at 400 degrees.
- I bake the bread while melting the cheese, not before. This makes it crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
- Skip the jalapenos if you don't like spicy, or swap them for mild peppers instead.
- I didn't use any sauce for the vegan Philly Cheese Sandwich, but homemade BBQ sauce would be great. Or try mustard dill sauce or lemon basil dressing.

I’ve bought a couple of bags of the steak tips and they don’t have any use by or expiration dates.
I have them in the refrigerator.
How long can I keep them unopened? Thank you.
Kathy Carmichael
Joe, the Beyond Steak Tips must be stored in the freezer, not the refrigerator. The expiration date on the bags I have is on the part where the bag is opened.
Karen
My husband is from Philly so we made these for the Phillies game. Perfect recipe. Best vegan Philly Cheesesteak we've ever had. Thank you so much.
