As many of you know, my mom is the reason I chose a plant-based life since she is my inspiration; I am in charge of Mother's Day brunch, which is an annual celebration at my house.

Mother figures come in all different forms, from an aunt, a big sister, a step-mom, or a nanny who has helped raise you to that special teacher at school who cared, or a kindly neighbor or work colleague who took you under their wing. There are dog moms, cat moms, and there are even dads who are moms. So, lets celebrate everyone who cares for others on this Mother's Day holiday!
Here are some of my favorite Mother's Day Brunch Ideas!
History of Mother's Day
The origins of celebrating motherhood can be traced back to Ancient Greece and Rome, where festivals were held in honor of their mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele. Much later, in the 16th century, Mothering Sunday was recognized during the fourth Sunday of Lent for parishes of the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church. So this holiday was less about mothers and more about attending your “mother church,” meaning the local Christian church.
But the history of Mother’s Day as we know it came from humble origins in West Virginia, USA.
During the American Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis, known as “Mother Jarvis” in her local parish, helped start “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to raise awareness of the poor health conditions in her community. These clubs proved to be a tremendous unifying force for a region that was socially divided during the Civil War. After the war ended, Mrs. Jarvis organized “Mother’s Friendship Day” to promote reconciliation between the Union and Confederacy.
In the late 19th century, the United States saw many different movements to organize a Mother’s Day, including the efforts of Julia Ward Howe, an abolitionist and suffragist, who wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation.” This called for mothers to unite and promote world peace.
Vegan Salads
I love making this vegan green bean salad for Mother's Day brunch because I can make it ahead of time, and everyone loves it!
Vegan Waldorf Salad is a vegan spin on a classic Waldorf Salad I enjoyed with my family when my grandma was still alive, and we celebrated Mother's Day at her house.
Sweet potato salad combines cooked and raw vegetables in a savory dressing served with peppery arugula.
This vegan strawberry salad combines fresh organic strawberries with veggies and teh crunchiness of toasted quinoa. This is one of Mom's favorites.
Everyone loves pasta, so this vegan pasta salad is a crowd-pleaser!
In a hurry? No worries! Whip up a beautiful, savory mushroom pasta salad recipe Mom will love.
For a traditional classic, serve vegan macaroni salad if you plan a brunch BBQ for Mom.
Vegan Sandwiches
One way I often serve Mother's Day brunch is to make a sandwich bar with assorted bread, sandwich fillings, and toppings like tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and pickles. Then, everyone makes their sandwich creations.
Chickpea egg salad is one of my family's favorites. Serve it as a sandwich spread, stuffed in small tomatoes, or with crackers and vegetables.
Another excellent sandwich spread is chickpea tuna salad! Serve with pita bread, or make tea sandwiches on bread or slices of cucumbers.
Add a little sassiness to your chickpea tuna salad with this curry salad instead of a traditional tuna chickpea salad.
Try this vegan chicken salad with red grapes! I love this salad in a bowl, but it makes a fabulous sandwich or topping for a salad as well. Or fill a zucchini boat for added veggie bliss.
Serve this vegan lobster salad in a bowl with all the fixings on the side for your guests to create unique lobster rolls. If you plan the theme, serve it with vegan clam chowder soup.
Fire up the grill and serve grilled vegetables with various vegan sauces or hummus and bread for the family to construct vegetable wrap sandwiches or enjoy the grilled vegetables without the bread.
Vegan Soups
Soups are easy to prepare in advance in a crockpot, Instant Pot, or stovetop. And you can make large amounts for guests to self-serve with crackers or bread on the side. Pile up the bowls, put the spoons in a cut container, and have a vegan soup bar.
Vegan Gnocchi soup combines fluffy gnocchi and veggies in tasty creamy vegan broth. This soup is my family's favorite.
Minestrone soup is loaded with veggies, beans, and a little pasta in a creamy tomato broth. I don't know anyone who doesn't love vegan Minestrone.
If you want a creamy, delicious, vegetable-filled soup, try this vegan cream of broccoli soup made with all vegetables, even the creamy, cheesy base.
Another hearty soup is wild rice soup with mushrooms. This is a great soup to serve with a large salad and crusty bread.
If serving soup with vegan brunch, remember the crackers. For an oil-free cracker option, these lavash crackers are easy to make.
Crowd-Pleasing Vegan Dips
To feed a hungry group, don't forget to serve various dips to please the family throughout the Mother's Day celebration.
Regardless of the type of holiday, this Greek layered dip is always the first empty plate during any party.
This white bean dip is simple and delicious. Served hot or cold, it is fabulous with toasted sourdough bread, crackers, or as a vegetable dip.
Additionally, this vegan french onion dip tastes fabulous with homemade potato chips or doubles as a spread on a vegetable sandwich.
For another vegetable-filled dip, try this creamy vegan spinach dip. This vegan spin on a classic spinach dip can be served in a bread bowl with pulled bread or vegetables on the side.
A beautiful addition to any vegan Mother's Day brunch is a plate of fresh spring fruit with vegan fruit dip.
Vegan Breakfast Ideas
For those who enjoy breakfast types foods for brunch, here are some fun ideas to make Mom smile.
How about having an omelet bar? Yes, you can! Make a large portion of chickpea omelet batter, offer various veggies, and put on your chef hat at the stove.
If you enjoy JUST Egg, try a Just Egg omelet as an alternative option for an omelet bar.
Instead of an omelet bar, make various quiches for your family to enjoy!
Or, make baby quiches with different fillings as a bite-sized treat!
Tips
- To expedite planning and cooking, use a vegetable chopper to save time.
- Creating a sandwich, omelet, soup, or appetizer bar is a great way to allow your guests to create their vegan meal by making choices and allowing you to enjoy your family rather than stay in the kitchen all day.
- Planning ahead, prepping, and cooking ahead of time reduces stress when preparing for any party.
- Serve a large fruit plate, or make fruit kabobs or a pretty addition to any vegan Mother's Day brunch menu.
- Try making fun bubbly mocktails to go with your chosen menu.
- Serve different bread choices on a platter with dips, sandwich spreads, and soups.
From my family to yours, Happy Mother's Day! I hope you enjoy your special day surrounded by the people and pets you love!
