Every time I pick up a jar of peanut butter, I'm astounded by the list of ingredients. If there isn't an inch and a half of oil floating on top, many brands have so much sugar it's shocking. And I don't know about you, but if I can make peanut butter at home that tastes delicious with only one ingredient, I'm all about it.

    Peanut Butter Ingredients

Roasted Spanish peanuts in a bowl on the table.
    • Salted Peanuts: I prefer red-skinned peanuts, but I always buy organic peanuts.

    Peanut Butter Ingredient Substitutions

    • If you don't want salt in your peanut butter, choose unsalted or lower sodium peanuts.
    • Any nut makes one-ingredient nut butter, such as cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, almonds, etc.
    • For nut-free options, try sunflower butter, pumpkin seed butter, oat butter, tahini, etc.

How to Make Homemade Peanut Butter

Spanish peanuts in a food processor with a large blade.

Making peanut butter is simple; you only need a food processor and peanuts.

    1. In a large food processor cup fitted with a large blade, add the peanuts.
    2. Place the top on the food processor.
    3. Turn the food processor on high, and allow it to run until the mixture is creamy.
    4. This process takes 5-7 minutes, depending on your machine and the peanuts chosen.
    5. For instance, dry roasted peanuts are dryer and require you to remove the lid from the food processor and scrape down the sides while processing. The process still yields the same result; it just takes more time.
    6. To make crunchy peanut butter, add ¼ cup of peanuts and pulse until finely chopped. Then, remove the chopped nuts, and blend the rest of the peanuts into creamy peanut butter, and fold in the chopped peanuts.

    Storing Peanut Butter

I am storing homemade peanut butter recipes in a container.
    • An open jar of peanut butter stays fresh up to three months in the pantry.
    • After that, it's recommended to store the peanut butter in the fridge (where it can maintain its quality for another 3-4 months).

How to Make a Grilled PB&J Sandwich with Banana

Grilled PBBJ sandwich on a plate.

For those new to cooking without oil, butter, or fat, bread grills, and toasts in a dry pan, you get the same delicious results; a crunchy, delicious grilled sandwich.

    1. Choose your favorite whole-grain bread. I buy all my oil-free bread at the farmer's market, at my favorite local bakery, Noble Bread.
    2. Spread homemade peanut butter on a thin layer on one piece of bread.
    3. Cut one banana into thin slices and place the slices on top of the bread smeared with peanut butter.
    4. Spread your favorite jam or jelly on the other side of the bread.
    5. Lay the jelly-covered bread on top of the peanut butter and banana side of bread.
    6. Heat a skillet to medium heat and place the sandwich into the pan.
    7. Cook for 5 minutes until brown on one side.
    8. Flip the sandwich over and cook another 5 minutes.
    I am holding a grilled PBB & J sandwich.

As a result, the peanut butter and jelly melt around the bananas, the bread gets crunchy, and it tastes euphoric!

Hi Stephanie, I usually buy them in the bulk section at Sprouts, or I have ordered them from Amazon. https://amzn.to/3E1cTDf

Heating the peanuts in a toaster oven before putting them in the food processor helps the peanuts grind faster and better. I buy raw Valencia peanuts, which need to be roasted. I let some cool, and turn some of the warm peanuts into peanut butter. If your peanuts are already roasted, heating them up a bit could improve the process for grinding. If you can't get Valencia peanuts, Trader Joe's Valencia No-Salt Peanut Butter is the closest to PB perfection store bought I have found.

Elaine, thanks for all the tips. I haven't tried the no-salt peanut butter at Trader Joe's. I'll look for it.
