We are fortunate to have a local vegan baker, Noble Bread, in Arizona. They make oil-free bread, bagels, wraps, and tortillas. Their products are sold at local farmer's markets all year round and in specialty shops around the valley.

But, if you don't live in Arizona, you can find oil-free bread in the bakery section of your local grocery stores. Just make sure to check the labels. Although some bakery breads contain oils, 90% are made without oil.

So, get out of the bread aisle, where the bread is full of preservatives and oils.

I am holding a cutting board with a multi-grain bagel.

How to Cut a Bagel for Bagel Chips

A bagel on a cutting board but into equal sized bagel chips.
    • To avoid squishing the bagel as you cut it, use a bread knife designed to cut the bread without shredding it.
    • Cut back and forth applying very little pressure.
    • You don't want to smash the bagel or will not achieve small circles.
    • Cut back and forth and let the teeth or the knife do the cutting.

    Bagel Chip Ingredients

Bagel chip ingredients: bagel, water, miso paste, lemon juice, garlic powder, and pepper.
    • Whole-Grain Bagel: I bought the whole-grain bagel at my local bakery.
    • Water: The water is used to thin the mixture.
    • Miso Paste: I used yellow miso paste but white miso paste works as well.
    • Lemon Juice: The lemon juice tones down the miso mixture and gives it a fresh taste.
    • Garlic Powder and Black Pepper: Garlic powder and pepper add flavor to the mixture.

Bagel Chip Ingredient Substitutions and Variations

    • For different flavored bagel chips, choose a flavored bagel, such as an onion bagel or an everything bagel.
    • Choose different seasoning combinations. For instance, instead of lemon juice, use lime juice and Tajin Seasoning for Mexican-flavored bagel chips, which can be used as an alternative to tortilla chips for salsa, guacamole, or cowboy caviar.
    • Or add different combinations of dried spices, like dill, rosemary, or your favorite seasoning blends.
    • I served my air-fryer bagel chips with hummus. But we also love dipping them in Vegan French Onion Dip, Vegan Spinach Artichoke Dip, Vegan Layered Dip, White Bean Avocado Dip, or White Bean Dip!
    • Add oil-free bagel chips to your favorite soup recipes, or serve with your favorite salads.

How to Make Air Fryer Bagel Chips

    • Transfer the bagel pieces to a bowl once the bagel is cup into equal-sized chips.
    • Add the miso, water, lemon juice, garlic powder, and pepper in a measuring cup.
    • Place the measuring cup in the microwave on high for 30 seconds.
    • Remove the measuring cup from the microwave and whisk the warm ingredients together.
    • Pour the mixture over the top of the bagel pieces in the bowl.
    • Use your hands or tongs to coat all the bagel chips with the miso mixture.

    Cooking Options

Although this is an air fryer recipe, you can also bake them in the oven if you don't have an air fryer. .

    Air Fryer

    • Preheat the air fryer to 300 degrees.
    • Place the coated bagel chip in the air fryer pan in a single layer.
    • If using a small air fryer, cook in batches.
    • Cook for 7-9 minutes.
    • Note, all air fryers are different, depending on size, so check the bagel chips every few minutes.
    • Times may vary.

    Baking

    • Preheat the oven to 325.
    • Using parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, line a baking sheet.
    • Put the coated bagel chips in a single layer on the baking sheet, not touching each other.
    • Bake for 12-15 minutes, flipping half way through.
    • Cook longer for crispier bagel chips.

    Recipe FAQs

Why are bagel chips called bagel chips?

Bagel chips are called so because they are essentially bagels that have been sliced thin and baked until they become crispy, like chips. The name reflects their origin and their final texture

Are bagel chips better than potato chips?

Bagel chips are incredibly versatile and full of flavor. They're sturdier than regular chips and can dig deeper into your dip of choice without cracking to bits. And this oil-free version is much healthier than potato chips.

Do I need a bagel chip slicer?

No, a standard bread knife works perfectly well to cut bagel chips.

    Tips

    • Always preheat the air fryer or oven before putting the bagel chips in the oven.
    • Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to help prevent sticking.
    • Make sure to toss the miso mixture to coat all the bagel pieces.
    • Don't overlap the bagel chips in the air fryer pan.
    • Check the bagel chips every few minutes to prevent overcooking.
    • Please add extra time if you prefer the bagel chips to be crispy.
    • Flip the bagel chips over halfway through cooking in the air fryer or in the oven
    • Homemade bagel chips can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
    • As long as the bagel chips are thoroughly dried in the air fryer/oven and fully cooled before you store them, they will stay good. If not, they will develop mold.
    • Refrigerating the bagel chips recipe will cause them to get soggy, but you can recook them to restore their crispiness.

If you love crispy chips, try this oil-free air-fryer bagel chips recipe! They are a delicious snack and an alternative to chips.
